Goodwin's Theories - #2

There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals; the lyrics are represented with images. He categorised this into three different groups: illustrative,
amplifying and disjunctive - 'illustrative' being a direct link between the lyrics and
what is shown on screen; 'disjunctive' being just about no link between them, and 'amplifying' being somewhere in the middle.

IllustrativeThere is a direct link between the words of the song and the actions in the video.

Example: Kate Nash - Foundations - famously illustrative music video. For example, the lyric including the word 'lemons' is accompanied with shots of Kate eating lemons from a huge fruit bowl.

AmplifyingIntroduces new meanings/images that do not conflict with the lyrics but that add layers of meaning.

Example: Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball - the lyrics aren't 100% directly linked to the visuals, but there are underlying themes and metaphors seen in the visuals, such as the wrecking ball seen throughout the video.

Disjunctive There is no direct relationship between the lyrics of the song and the events of the video.

Example: Lana Del Ray - Video Games - this music video is made up of simple performances that are cross-cut with a montage of found-footage – mainly of 1950s, '60s and '70s America. The video is creating an atmosphere.
